Charlotte Mason Philippines About Us

The Cabag Family

Hi, I’m Yen Cabag, a wife and mother of, currently, three boys—I say currently, because we’re not done having children! As advocates for fostering and adoption, Mark and I have a family of biological, foster, and adopted children, all of us cultivating a love for lifelong learning.

My life vision is to find beauty and create beauty, which I feel matches with what the Charlotte Mason philosophy offers to our family. I’ve always enjoyed wildflowers (more than flowers in vases), beaches and coves, reading and writing books and stories, playing music, drawing imperfect sketches and starting a handicraft project—which I may not always finish!

My Interests

So, outside of my writing work hours, you might find me perfectly at home sitting on the floor with my kids sculpting with clay, or riding bikes with them, or encouraging a budding author to keep writing… or crawling on my hands and knees scouring through the latest stash of preloved books at Booksale!

But that doesn’t mean I don’t get frazzled or overwhelmed and needing a break! Like you, I have my share of parenting struggles, and I constantly need to remind myself to take care of myself—Mother Culture, as coined by the CM community.

Our Homeschooling Journey

We started homeschooling when our oldest son was 5 years old. Within the first two months, I was ready to give up! Thankfully, during that time, the boxed curriculum that we bought had a support group on an online forum, and many of the other mothers encouraged me and gave me helpful advice on how to adjust things.

During that time, I was also researching intensively on the Charlotte Mason method, slowly but surely finding a lot of the principles aligning with what we wanted to see in our children’s education—and in our family life! Little by little, we started making changes, adding nature study here, inserting a read-aloud storytime there. And we’ve not looked back since.

Through ups and downs, we’ve found that the components of a CM education have been a huge blessing to us. The rich books, music, outdoor time, and even handicrafts have helped us grow individually and as a family, giving us all a common language and shared experiences.

This is why we, as a family, greatly desire to share the beauties of this philosophy with the families that we meet.

Coaching Services

We believe a beautiful alternative is on the horizon for the education of the next generation of Filipinos.

This is the reason why I set up Charlotte Mason Philippines, and why I help coach families who want to give the Charlotte Mason method a try in their homeschool.

This includes helping give book recommendations, and also selling preloved books to help augment the cost of homeschooling. 🙂 I also love connecting people and seeing them encourage one another in the challenges and cheer one another on in the triumphs!

Connection with Living Pupil Homeschool Solutions

And because here in the Philippines, a homeschool provider can give the necessary support and paperwork for our children’s education, I partner with Living Pupil Homeschool Solutions, a homeschool provider based in Cebu. Check us out, and we look forward to welcoming you on board.

But, whether or not you choose to enroll, I’d love to get to know you and build this community of families learning and applying the Charlotte Mason method. I love getting to know other CM-ers, including independent (indie) homeschoolers.
