Living Pupil Homeschool Solutions

On my end, I would like to help you get to know the founder, my good friend Azenith “Zen” Jacalan, a little bit. So I’m very happy to bring you this mini-interview. Read on! 🙂

Living Pupil Founder Zen Jacalan

What first attracted you to the CM method?

Zen: I was attracted to CM’s gentle way of learning, of how it respects the child as a person and its emphasis on nature study where the children get to observe nature and appreciate God’s wonderful creation. I like that it maximizes the child’s natural way of learning. As a Teacher- Mom, preparation for the lessons is not as toxic compared to the Eclectic Method and Unit studies homeschooling where I came from.

How has the CM method impacted your homeschool and your family?

Zen: As a family, “discussion time” became part of our day where we get to discuss the principles and inspirational ideas of the living books we read and find ways on how we can apply them. Before going to bed last night, my 9-year-old suddenly remembered the story of King Henry III and said ” Mom do you know why he was considered the most wicked king? Because he listened to counsel of his evil friends.” He went on to say we need to be wise in choosing our friends and in who we listen to. The method also enabled us to become more intentional in habit training.

What are your top 3 favorite parts of a CM homeschool?

  • Nature study
  • Narration, and
  • The reading of great living books.

What is your vision for the next generation of Filipino students? OR How do you see the CM method impacting the lives of Filipinos?

Zen: I hope to see every Filipino child enjoying while learning. May the living books they read influence them to become movers, passionate and compassionate leaders of the next generation. Hopefully, as they read living books, they will have an intimate relationship with the author of the Greatest Living book of all.

What would you advise a parent who is just starting on CM?

Zen:

  • Trust the method. There are CM practices you might find challenging or too easy, but keep trusting the method because it really works:-)
  • Read / Familiarize yourself with CM’s 20 Principles. Her principles will guide you and will help you understand the “why” behind  her method.
  • Join a CM community to be able to learn and grow together.

Yay! I hope this gives you a little glimpse of our heart for your children.
